Aquaponics offers many benefits over other gardening techniques.
Aquaponics allows plants and fish to live harmoniously without producing any unusable waste. That is the true mark of a sustainable solution. You put very little into the system and reap tremendous benefits.
By its very design, aquaponics creates 100% organic produce that is not impregnated with chemical additives or insecticides. In fact, adding these chemicals to an aquaponics system will kill the helpful bacteria that are integral to the conversion process and the system will fail.
These bacteria are what create the self-sufficient ecosystem.
Although they can be introduced synthetically to speed up the creation of the biofilter, this is often unnecessary as high levels of ammonia will allow the bacteria to grow on their own. Once an aquaponics system has a healthy population of bacteria, they will reproduce and maintain their numbers automatically.
As long as the bacteria population is healthy, an aquaponics system only needs new fish as mature ones are harvested and plants to continue absorbing the nitrogen products created by the bacteria.
Aquaponics uses much less water than traditional gardening or hydroponic systems. Because the system is designed as a closed loop, the only water lost is small amounts absorbed by plant material and evaporative processes.
